So awards season is upon us! Hoorah for that. After all, what better way is there to cheer yourself up on a dreary January day than by looking at pictures of a load of beautiful dresses? It was certainly a lovely way to spend my birthday morning. Anyway, I thought I'd do a quick round-up of the best and worst dresses, and why exactly they did or didn't work (in my opinion, anyway). Just click on the celebrities' names to see their outfits. So, let's start with the bad, shall we? (I always like to end on a good note).
So first up we have the hideously attired Christina Aguilera. There is only one word I can use to describe this Zuhair Murad dress: tacky. I mean, nude and black lace studded with diamantés? Eugh. Teaming it with over-bleached hair hasn't helped matters, either. Next we have Heidi Klum. Now, whereas Christina was never going to pull a great look out of the bag, Heidi has the potential to look amazing, having done so on many an occasion in the past. So why she chose this hideous Marc Jacobs dress is beyond me. I really didn't like his S/S'11 show and I really hate this dress. Horrible colours, horrible corsage and horrible stacks of bracelets to boot. And then there's Halle Berry, who apparently thought that putting a chiffon skirt on some underwear would constitute an outfit appropriate for the Golden Globes. Madness.
So here are some more celebrities who really ought to sack their stylists. Now Eva Longoria's outfit isn't horrible, per se, it's just boooooring. I mean, one of the most prestigious red carpet events of the year and she chooses this sickeningly dull black Zac Posen dress? It's all just so very 2006. Boring colour, boring shape, boring hair, boring clutch, boring bow belt. Next up is mum-to-be Natalie Portman. She's one of those celebrities who gets it so right one day and so wrong the next. Unfortunately this Viktor & Rolf dress just isn't working for me. The pastel pink satin is bad enough, but the massive red rose is just odd and incongruous. Boring hair and bad make-up, too. And the final lesson in how not to dress comes from Tina Fey; although there were, sadly, many more awful dresses last night, I didn't want to hurt your eyes too much. Tina inexplicably chose this clingy blue velvet L'Wren Scott number, which is wrong on so many levels. Velvet is a real minefield if you don't know your stuff, and sadly Tina falls into all the common traps. Ill-fitting, bad colour, horrid arm details and a velvet train: this dress is just a fashion disaster, I'm afraid.
Now, that's quite enough of the bad. Onto the good! First up is Amy Adams. I've never really paid much attention to her before, but I like this look. It's nothing groundbreaking, but the Golden Globes is not really the time to try out crazy new looks anyway. Sometimes a little classic glamour is just the ticket. Love the sophisticated navy of this Marchesa number and its laser cut floral detailing. Very elegant. Next we have January Jones looking sizzling in Versace. I mean, wow. Personally I wouldn't have put quite so much cleavage on display at a red carpet event, but there's no denying that January looks sensational. The scarlet dress and lips teamed with blonde bombshell hair is simply stunning. And then there's Scarlett Johansson. Like Amy Adams, Scarlett went with quite a safe choice in Elie Saab, but in this case safe is certainly pretty. It's not my favourite look of all but I love the nude colour and subtle embellishment, and really approve of the simple hair and make-up, too. Shame about the ugly tattoo, though.
And now a few more beautiful looks for your viewing pleasure. Our next lovely lady is the delightful Anne Hathaway, giving us a feast of champagne-coloured sequins in this Armani Privé dress. Floor-length sequins aren't the easiest thing to pull off, but the matte finish, soft colour and backless detail, coupled with the understated hair and accessories, makes this look a winner for me. Then there's Mila Kunis (star of Black Swan and voices Meg in Family Guy, in case you didn't know), looking sensational in emerald Vera Wang. Green was a popular colour last night, with Angelina Jolie, Elisabeth Moss and Catherine Zeta Jones also decked out in it, but Mila definitely looked the best. I especially love the ruching detailing, the swept back hair and the lack of jewellery. And finally, our last best dressed beauty is the lovely Claire Danes, and probably my favourite look of the night. This simple pink Calvin Klein shift feels like the most modern dress of all, and by eschewing all accessories save a chunky cuff, Claire lets the stunning piece speak for itself. Very well done indeed.
