Yellow is quite a tricky colour to wear. Get it wrong and you get it really, really wrong. But get it right and it will lift your outfit from drab and dull to fun, quirky and summery in one fell swoop. So, the rules. Number one: do not team it with an all-black outfit, or you'll look like a bumblebee. Two: bright blocks of yellow look fantastic on darker skin tones, but if you're as pale as I am, best to steer clear. Three: if in doubt, keep it away from your face (aka on shoes and bags rather than tops and dresses). Four: always team with neutrals like pale grey, nude or taupe. So below you'll find my picks of the best yellow items on the high street right now. You'll notice that they're mostly accessories, because they're just so much easier to wear. The two items of clothing I've chosen, however, are brilliant for yellow-fearers: the Zara top slowly fades into yellow, keeping it low-key and away from the face, while the Jonathan Saunders/Edition dress contrasts a simple grey tee with lemon sequins for a subtle and classy effect. You don't need to be at all subtle when it comes to accessories, though; in fact my favourites come in bold, unapologetic egg-yellow, like the Barry M nail paint (a dead ringer for Chanel's Mimosa shade) and butter-soft leather Zara clutch. Shoes should also be bright and bold; just keep the rest of your outfit very simple. And if you're really shy, you can't go wrong with a subtle flash of yellow underwear.
