today i bought… topshop rescue fringe sandals

topshop rescue fringe sandals

I always find the mid-season sales somewhat disappointing; for some reason they never seem to have reduced any of the items on my wish list, and even if they have, the reductions are often only around 30%, aka not enough to tempt me. This time around I haven't even been convinced by any of Whistles' offerings. But I have made one lone sale purchase in these lovely Topshop shoes. I am powerless to resist a beautiful heel that promises to be walkable too, in the same way as I am before croc-embossed leather. So when a shoe combines both of these tantalising prospects, along with a hint of Alexander Wang, I'm pretty much sold. Never mind the fact that I've bought these just as open-toe-appropriate weather is fast disappearing. When a shoe this great comes along at this price, seasonal dressing becomes pretty much irrelevant, right?

today i'm inspired by… camille over the rainbow

Just a little fashinspiration for a Sunday evening. Can't quite get over how perfect this outfit from the lovely Camille Charrière is. The cream coat (not too dissimilar from my River Island one, no?), the leather shorts, the Chanel Boy (sigh) and the Céline plaid slip-ons… I pretty much wish I could look like this at all times.

today i'm wearing...

River Island black blazer

H&M velvet box bag

Topshop white sleeveless top

Zara nude sandals

When I go out in the evening I usually like to keep things simple and classic and add a couple of interesting accessories. To be honest I've worn this white tee, black blazer and black jeans/leather trousers combo multiple times, but I still love it. Today I've teamed it with my current favourite bag and, making the most of open toe weather while I can, nude heels (plus some unintentionally-slightly-80s hair which I may still rethink since I haven't left the house yet). Have a great Friday night!

today i want... topshop kate bosworth red leather trousers

topshop kate bosworth red leather trousers

Topshop The Collection starring Kate Bosworth stretch skinny leather trousers / £295

I knew I'd be a fan of Kate Bosworth's collection for Topshop (not entirely clear on whether she actually had a hand in designing it?) because I'm a huge fan of both the actress and the brand. Let's be honest: Kate's pretty much the girl we all want to be: gorgeous, used to date Orlando Bloom (though I'd rather leave out the 'used to'), and with an excellent yet totally effortless sense of style. Still, I didn't know I'd love her 40-piece A/W edit, which landed today, quite as much as I do. For starters it's about 80% leather, so that's got my vote already. Secondly there's a lot of black, white and silver, which again, is a pretty failsafe fashion formula if you ask me. The pieces are mostly classic with a twist, which is exactly how I like to dress, with simple grey marl tees and elegant pointed ankle boots sitting alongside asymmetric leather skirts and sheepskin totes. To be honest, I adore it all, but it's the above red leather trousers which really stood out to me as the hero piece. As you may know I'm a woman on a lifelong quest to find the perfect black leather trousers (almost impossible if you want to pay under a grand), but I also have a real soft spot for a red pair. I don't know why, but if you ask me there's something perennially chic about red leather trousers (check out this look if you don't believe me). The fact that these beauties are bright scarlet with zips at the ankle only enhances my love for them. I can't tell you how perfect they'd look with my new cream coat. Now the only problem is, as usual, the price. If money were no object I'd be snapping these up in red, black and cream. Sadly though it looks like I'll be waiting for the sales on this one (sigh)... In the meantime, the search continues.

Shop the whole Kate Bosworth collection for Topshop here.

today i'm wearing...

H&M velvet box bag

Zara black leather trousers

Ray-Ban Wayfarers

River Island cream boucle oversized coat

Zara patent ankle boots

So after posting about this beautiful coat the other day, I couldn't resist ordering it to see if it would be as perfect in real life (have to say, very impressed with ASOS' delivery speed: ordered at 8.45pm and received it at 11.30am the next day!) Turns out this was a fatal mistake, because as soon as I had shrugged it over my shoulders I knew there was no way I could send it back. It's satisfyingly heavy, chunky and warm, as well as being the perfect amount of oversized: not so much as to look ridiculous (do size down, though). In short, although my debit card is crying out for a rest, I don't regret keeping this beauty one little bit.

today i'm wearing...

Current-Elliott Stiletto leopard jeans

H&M grey cashmere jumper

Zara patent ankle boots

Whistles Marlon leather jacket

Sorry for the less than brilliant photo quality. It's getting more and more difficult to find a moment to take photos before the sun goes down, and when the clocks go back next weekend that's going to prove even more of a challenge. But anyway I hope these are better than nothing at all, because I haven't posted that many outfits with my beloved Current/Elliott leopard jeans and I wanted to show you how I wore them today. They just so happen to go perfectly with the Zara patent ankle boots that have barely left my feet lately: the skinny cut and cropped length means they tuck in a treat. Oh, and this snuggly cashmere jumper goes with anything and everything, so don't forget to pick up this week's Grazia (UK) for 25% off at H&M if you're looking to snap one up for yourself.

today i want... river island cream bouclé oversized coat

river island cream boucle coat

Every year we have to invest in a winter coat usually before it's cold enough to wear one, if we want to snap up the best offerings. They start landing in stores in August, when the thought of wrapping up in toasty woollen outerwear can leave you feeling a bit ill. But such is life. This year, though, I've left my choice of coat unusually late, not due to practical considerations like the weather, but rather because I just haven't been able to make my mind up. I'm actually a little bored of pink coats already (serious case of trend overload) and my other main option, the checked coat, worries me in that it may not stand the test of time. Given that coats are usually more of a financial investment than some pieces, I like to make sure mine will last beyond Christmas. Pink coats, it's safe to say, while super fashionable right now, will probably be left in the back of your wardrobe come the new year. The same can probably be said for pinstripes. With checks/tartan, the jury's out, but certainly the very distinctive Céline-esque laundry check will forever be associated with A/W'13 (as a general rule, the more totally en vogue an item is now, the less it will make up its cost-per-wear ratio). So it's a toss-up. Right now, my coat-allocated budget is leaning towards this oversized fluffy beauty from River Island. The shape feels very this season, while the colour is timeless and the texture something I always lean towards. Below are a few other options I'm considering. Have you bought your winter coat yet, and if so which one did you go for?

today i'm wearing...

H&M grey cashmere jumper

Whistles burgundy fedora

H&M velvet chain box bag

Zara patent ankle boots

Really trying to shop less at the moment so that I can save up for a little bit of Isabel Marant for H&M in November (let's be honest, resistance will be futile, right?) So I probably shouldn't have walked into H&M the other day, because when I saw this 100% cashmere jumper for a mere £40, there was no way I could leave it behind. Oh, and did I mention how much I'm in love with my new bag?!

today i'm wearing...

River Island black blazer

Cambridge Satchel Company navy satchel

Zara white jeans

Ray-Ban black Wayfarers

Zara patent ankle boots

Sorry if you're getting tired of seeing these patent boots, but I have to warn you they'll be making many more appearances in the near future. Can't get enough of them right now. Today I teamed them with what I'm quickly realising is a failsafe fallback outfit for me: skinny jeans, oversized jumper, shrugged on jacket and Ray-Bans. But if you ask me there's nothing wrong with keeping things simple. Do you have a formula you fall back on for getting dressed?

today i'm wearing...

Topshop white t-shirt

Kurt Geiger mini leopard bag

Primark sleeveless trench

Topshop ripped blue Baxter jeans

Zara patent ankle boots

So it seems we've hit the pause button on the weather and we're stuck in a kind of midpoint between summer and autumn that can't quite make its mind up. Whatever, I'm not complaining, because this is pretty much the perfect temperature for getting dressed (sounds weird, but you know what I mean). Not too cold for open toes but not too warm for pretty jumpers, and just right for all the totally useless items in your wardrobe such as this sleeveless trench. I don't know about you, but I'm making the most of it while it lasts.

today i bought... smythson love heart keyring

smythson breast cancer love key ring

Smythson love heart keyring / exclusive to my-wardrobe.com

I wasn't feeling too great last week, and this translated into a lot of sitting at home catching up on House and browsing the internet. Unfortunately, the latter activity translated into a lot of online shopping, so my bank balance isn't too happy with me (on the other hand, I've watched so much House that I'm practically a medically trained professional now. But I digress). In any case, I've been wanting to invest in a luxe keyring for a while now, and when I saw this heart beauty on my-wardrobe.com the other day I knew it was the perfect one: not only is it super chic, but 20% from every sale goes to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. A little treat and a good deed all in one adorable little package = (almost) guilt-free retail therapy. I don't know about you, but I'm feeling better already.

today i'm wearing...

Kurt Geiger mini leopard bag

Zara black patent ankle boots

Only had a few seconds to snap photos before setting off to Nottingham today to visit my sister, so sorry for the strange light in these shots. After much umming and ahhing I finally decided to keep these Zara patent boots and I'm very glad I did. The high ankle definitely presents a few challenges trouser-wise, but after trying them on with most pairs I own I'm satisfied there's usually a solution (tuck in if skinny enough, like with these jeans, or roll up if not). In any case, I'm kind of obsessed with the patent. And there's something about crunching through autumn leaves in shiny boots which I just adore.

today i want... h&m velvet chain box bag

H&M velvet chain box bag

I don't know about you, but I have a pretty long list of designer bags I'd buy if I won the lottery (which would be very surprising given that I don't play). In fact it's longer than the list of clothes or shoes I'd buy put together. It goes a little something like this: 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli, Alexander Wang anything, Stella McCartney Falabella, Céline everything, Givenchy Obsedia, Valentino Va Va Voom, Proenza Schouler PS11 and Chanel Boy. I could go on. So far I've got my Mulberry Alexa and I'm really hoping to snap up one of the others in the post-Christmas sales. But while waiting for the in-no-way-ever-going-to-happen eventuality that allows me to afford all of these, I will continue scouring the high street for lookalikes. The latest spot on my lust list goes to H&M's rather lovely little velvet box bag with satisfyingly chunky silver chain strap, which I happen to think is a not too poor substitute for Chanel's bag of the moment, the Boy. A couple of years ago I'd have said a Chanel 2.55 was my number one fantasy bag of choice, but thanks mainly to its overexposure on the arms of the less than stylish (soap stars, I'm looking at you), it's largely been usurped in fashionable circles by its younger brother. I make no apologies for my heart-stopping love of the beautiful Boy, but I also am under no illusions that I will ever (well, not anytime in the next ten years) be able to make it mine. So I'm clicking home this H&M beauty instead. I first saw it on Marie Andersen of the very brilliant Blame It On Fashion when I photographed her for the Telegraph street style during fashion week, and upon asking what she was wearing fully expected to hear a designer name when she told me where she'd bought her bag (see her look here). I promptly set about scouring H&M's website for it and lo and behold, there it was, as part of their "premium quality" bag collection (which just means real leather as opposed to faux, as far as I can tell). So to cut an already quite long story slightly shorter: it's on its way to me. And I'm very excited.

today i love... 3 ways to wear pink

day /

How to wear pink in the day

night /

How to wear pink at night

How to wear pink for work

Pink is without a doubt one of the biggest emerging trends of autumn/winter. In fact it's almost getting a little too ubiquitous already, to the point where it seems like everybody remotely associated with fashion now owns a pink coat. But I've said it before and I'll say it again: don't let what anybody else is wearing dictate what you do. So what if the world and his dog has snapped up the Topshop fluffy beauty above (my top high street pink coat pick)? As ever, it's all in the styling. And there are three rules I personally recommend sticking to here: 1) choose very pale pink. Dark pink is never a good idea and medium pink looks way too frumpy. The paler, the better. 2) Keep it pretty much the only, if not the only, colour in your look. Pink clashed with red, pink with purple, pink with print = no way. With leopard print being the only exception (I almost consider it a neutral), keep to a strict palette of black, white and grey. The only other colours I'd think about are a very dark burgundy, like the Kurt Geiger bag above, or perhaps a very dark navy. 3) If in doubt, keep it simple. No fussy jewellery, no lipstick, no bright nails. Stick to neutrals and play with texture instead. A fluffy pink surface clashed with shiny patent boots is always a winner in my book. Likewise anything leather: its tough connotations contrast perfectly with pink's soft girliness. So for daytime, I'd love to throw this beautiful coat over a simple grey marl tee and white jeans, adding tortoiseshell sunglasses for a point of difference. You can be a little more daring at night: this pink sequinned skirt screams Barbie, so go as far away from that as possible with your accessories: ridiculously grown-up patent spike heel courts and a clear perspex clutch. Finally, for work, the same rules apply. A pink ribbed knit looks nothing short of professional against a ponyhair skirt and chic Mary Jane heels. Add the aforementioned chain-handled bag (hello, Christmas wish list) and you're good to go. Who said pink had to be scary?
