today i'm inspired by... caroline blomst

Is it any wonder I'm totally obsessed with the wardrobe of Swedish street style supremo Caroline Blomst? Today she showcased yet another utterly simply yet totally knockout look, consisting of a black fur coat, black denim, black Balenciaga suede bag and burgundy Marant boots. Totally effortless and yet totally awesome. Caroline, I am in awe.

today i'd save on... acne vs topshop

On left: Acne Star boots / £400 at Kurt Geiger

For some things it really is worth splashing out on the real McCoy, and I can say from experience that Acne boots fall into that category. This became clear when walking around Paris in the rain the other weekend: while my friend's high street boots quickly let in water and the soles caused her pain after a couple of hours, my sturdy Pistols stayed comfortable and dry. Having said that, though, I'm sadly not made of money, and much as I would love to buy Acne's entire stock of boots, that's not going to happen any time soon. Topshop had one of their biggest ever successes with their Ambush boots, which bore more than a passing resemblance to Acne's Pistols and, as long-time readers will know, I was one of the first to fall in love with them. And now Topshop have clearly jumped back on the same bandwagon with Acne's newest ankle boot delight: the Star. Seen on the likes of Alexa Chung and Clémence Poésy, the Star works for much the same reaosns as the Pistol: it is utterly simple and classic yet undeniably stylish. I don't doubt it will achieve the same cult status as its older sister. Retailing as it does for £400, though, I fear it will remain a pipe dream for me. In the meantime, I'll be heading to Topshop to try on their Anarchy lookalike. Maybe I'll do the same as I did with the Ambush and upgrade to Acne, leaving them somewhat overshadowed and neglected in the corner of my wardrobe, but just maybe they'll prove a classic in their own right.

I don't wear earrings very often, so when I do I like them to stand out. I love the contrast of in-your-face jewels against a soft, simple knit.

today i'm inspired by... bárbara martelo for mango

Video / Mango.com

Spanish fashion editor Bárbara Martelo's simple but standout approach to dressing has made her a firm favourite with street style photographers, and it's easy to see why. Like me, she's a huge fan of leather and loves a minimalist but luxe silhouette. Today I came across this short of her for Mango.com's magazine, and I love how utterly simple it is, perfectly demonstrating her effortless style sense. What I also admire about it is that it proves you don't have to spend a million dollars to look it. The amazing herringbone coat she's wearing costs just £39.99, and Martelo's styling of it has rocketed it straight to the top of my wish list.

today i love... topshop tumblr

Talking of my bat print jumper, I just so happen to be wearing it in my third appearance on Topshop's Tumblr today (outfit from a few weeks ago). I'm always very honoured to be featured, given what a huge fan I am of the ubiquitous high street brand (which you can probably tell from the fact that ooh, 90% of my blog posts mention Topshop). And I have to agree with them that this lovely jumper is indeed a beauty and I most certainly will love it forever. Check out all the photos of this outfit here, and my two previous Topshop Tumblr appearances here and here.

today i bought...

Cambridge Satchel Company navy satchel /

I posted about this satchel a few days ago and although I tried with all my might to resist its charms, I just couldn't bring myself to return it once it had arrived. You see despite my shopping guilt, I know that this is a wise purchase. Structured, small and fashioned from beautiful, dark matt navy leather... it is a boxy satchel delight.

today i bought...

Topshop Unique bomber jacket /

It's safe to say that A/W'12 saw my favourite ever collection by Topshop Unique, the catwalk outing from my number one beloved high street brand. I would even go so far as to say that I haven't been this obsessed about a designer collection since Burberry Prorsum A/W'10 (I still am literally in love with that collection). Unique is perhaps even more exciting for me than Burberry in that I can actually afford some of it and make it my own. Since seeing it make its way down the catwalk in February, then, the only dilemma has been which piece to invest in. I initially lusted after the long burgundy coat, but in real life it was just far too oversized, making me look like a child trying on adult clothing. I ordered the silk U print dress, but although I liked it, I didn't love it. And then I saw Sabrina Meijer of afterDRK in this fantastic khaki bomber and I just knew this was the one. Of course by that time the size Small had sold out, but I went for the Medium, and actually I really like the oversized-ness; I felt sort of like I'm in the RAF in this baby. Oversized, soft, comfortable, warm, with satisfyingly chunky pewter zips, a sumptuous silk lining and buckles at the wrists: it is just all kinds of beautiful. I am very excited to own a piece of this collection, and I'm even more excited to wear it.

This coat is definitely a would-save-it-in-a-fire item and even a serious contender for my all-time favourite piece of clothing. I found it in the Topshop sale about three or four years ago and got an extra 10% off as most of the buttons were missing. It's deliciously military, with a pleasingly stiff collar, a sumptuous khaki silk lining and red piping around the edges. I think military is a trend that will always capture my heart; occasionally I tire of it, but I inevitably fall back in love with it every couple of seasons. Right now, thanks to Topshop Unique and Isabel Marant, it's back in my good books in a big way.

today i want... h&m white wedge heels

White shoes were once firmly relegated to fashion no-man's-land, the preserve of Essex girls and Essex girls alone. But then along came Phoebe Philo at Céline, and in lending her magic designer hand to them, she transformed them in a way only she could from fashion disaster to fashion triumph. There's something fresh and clean about a white shoe with a black, navy or burgundy outfit; it's a look that's somehow perfectly minimalist yet not at all boring. Luckily for those of us who can't afford Céline (or who aren't quite convinced white shoes won't fall out of fashion favour again before long), H&M have produced this rather fantastic budget version. So, overcome your prejudices and step out in white this autumn.
