Dogeared necklace /
ASOS bracelet /

If, like me, you're wary of wearing florals for fear of seeming too girly, then I can wholeheartedly recommend a top and shoes like these. I think it's impossible to feel cutesy in a creased leather top and ankle cuff heels.

today i bought...

I've posted about all three of these items before, so it just goes to show that my willpower when it comes to fashion is seriously failing at the moment. I have my sister to thank for surprising me with the beautiful Maison Scotch jumper I'd been longing for, while the Miss Selfridge jeans were just too much of a bargain to pass up (I've decided I actually really do like the colour). And the Topshop heels... Well, let's just say the price means I haven't 100% decided whether I'm going to keep them, but I'm guessing I'll probably give in.

today i want... topshop riot nude sandals

Isn't it funny that however many clothes you have, there still always seems to be something missing that you need? Or maybe that should be "need"... In any case, this hot weather has thrown up what seems to me to be a gaping hole in my shoe wardrobe: nude sandals. Dressing for the heat is a challenge in itself, but finding suitable footwear can be particularly testing. I've been mainly relying on my Mango heels as the most summery shoes I own, but even they are still black. Suddenly my collection of shoe/boots and closed toe heels seems overwhelmingly wintry. What I need, I told myself, is some nude sandals. I considered getting these Marant-esque Zara shoes, but as I said the heel was just a little too low and the T-bar wasn't convincing me, so I decided to hold out for something better. And lo and behold, what should appear on the Topshop website but these beauties? Nude, strappy, high of heel and oh so beautiful... Suddenly I can't imagine my wardrobe without them. What else could I possibly wear with any outfit except for these little wonders? And that's the point where "want" turns into "need" and willpower goes out of the window... I'm sure you're familiar with that feeling. So "needless" to say these are currently winging their way towards me. Well, you can't argue with necessity, right?

Every now and then I sort of overdose on leopard print and leave it alone for a while (usually in favour of snake), but I always come back to it sooner or later. It's just such a failsafe. Take these shoes: I've had them for a year and a half now and I still think they're perfect.

today i'm wearing...

Topshop jacket /
Topshop t-shirt /
ASOS shorts /
Ray-Ban sunglasses /
H&M bracelet /

I have to say this is pretty much my ideal go-to outfit: leather shorts teamed with monochrome tailoring, great shoes and Ray-Bans (plus, crucially, bare legs). Simple, fuss-free and timeless, I like to think.

PS, Happy birthday to my lovely friend Esme!

today i'd save on... isabel marant vs zara

On left / Isabel Marant Rio chain-strapped leather sandals / £500 at Net-a-porter
On right / Zara nude chain-strapped sandals / £39.99

Apologies for the blurry photo of the Zara shoes: I snapped this shot last weekend on Instagram and was waiting for them to arrive online, but so far there's no sign of them (I'll let you know if they show up, but otherwise you'll have to look in store). Anyway, many of you will no doubt be aware of Isabel Marant's to-die-for Rio sandals: surely the lust-have shoe of the summer. The flattering nude colour combined with the muddle of chain straps, which just a year ago would have seemed over-the-top, equals a shoe that will complete any summer outfit. Needless to say I'm sadly not in a position to spend £500 on a pair of shoes (saving up has never been a strength of mine), so I'm pretty happy to see that Zara's TRF line has produced this pretty convincing imitation. Two factors stopped me from buying them, however: the strap is T-bar rather than across the toe, which I don't like quite as much, and the heel is quite low, lower than the Marants. Still, I definitely haven't ruled them out. Currently I'm waiting on two quite extravagant online shopping orders to arrive, though, so I should probably wait and see just how much of a financial dent they make first...

These leopard jeans are definitely one of my best bargains of the past few months. Only £12 and I've got a lot of use out of them. Still can't decide whether to keep my pink snakeskin jeans though...

today i want... topshop boutique paisley tee & trousers

Paisley is another one of those unlikely trends going around at the moment which crept up on me and took me completely by surprise (see also: wedge trainers / floral trousers / tie-dye). A few months ago I would have baulked at the thought of dressing myself head-to-toe in any print, let alone one heretofore mainly associated with 70s carpets and men's pyjamas. But thanks mainly to JW Anderson, paisley is suddenly looking incredibly desirable. Seeing Alexa Chung teaming Anderson's paisley trousers with silver Céline heels at LFW first got me reassessing my position back in February, and I've now reached the point where the sight of the Topshop Boutique set above is positively exciting. I can't imagine anything more awesome right now (especially in this weather) than turning up to a party decked out in this silk tee and trousers, hair slicked back, lots of eyeliner and bronzer, accessorised with just simple black heels and perhaps this clutch. Sadly I can't really justify dropping £130 on what is, I don't doubt, a flash-in-the-pan trend, but I am certainly considering splashing out on just the tee. Even if you don't fancy head-to-toe paisley, the thought of this tee teamed with ripped jeans surely can't fail to float your fashion boat.

today i'm wearing...

Zara shirt /
H&M skirt /
Topshop bag /
Ray-Ban sunglasses /

I bought this skirt a year and a half ago in the H&M sale, and as it was too big, proceeded to spend the next couple of months scouring upwards of 10 H&M stores for a smaller one. I never did manage to exchange it, so it's spent the last eighteen months in a plastic bag in the bottom of my wardrobe. Last night, however, when struggling to decide what to wear in the heat (bare legs were definitely on the agenda, but I don't own a lot of work-appropriate shorts), I suddenly remembered this skirt and thought I'd try it on. Turns out that wearing a too-big high-waisted skirt down on your hips actually kind of works. It's a little on the unflattering side but I quite like the slouchy oversized feel; plus it makes the length much more suited for work. All in all: win win (and it only cost me £7).

today i love... topshop nails in glimmer

I go through phases with nail varnish, but if in doubt I will always reach for a metallic of some sort. My Barry M silver has been regularly restocked through overuse, but it may now have a real rival for my all-time favourite polish. This Topshop shade, which depending on the light looks somewhere between old gold, rose gold and bronze, is a universally flattering colour and goes with absolutely everything. Best of all, it lasts superbly well and won't chip at all for two days. And what with all this warm weather we're having, I think it might look even better set against a tan.

today i want... miss selfridge pink snakeskin jeans

Miss Selfridge pink snake ankle grazer / £20 (reduced from £38)

I was browsing the internet during my lunch break today and decided to check out Miss Selfridge, having exhausted the Topshop and Zara sites. I don't often look there because I find most of the stock a bit too girly and (gulp) young for me, but occasionally I do find the odd little beauty. Anyway, I clicked on the tempting red "Sale" banner and almost immediately found myself confronted by these fantastic pink snakeskin jeans. As I zoomed in for a closer look, I knew it was love at first click. Lately you might have noticed that I've developed something of an obsession with printed jeans (reference my striped, floral, leopard and tie-dye pairs), but I just can't help myself. It's something I mainly blame Caroline Blomst for, given that she owns the Current/Elliott Stiletto jeans in at least 7 different prints (4 of which are different colours of leopard). Now that is jean devotion. Of course I can't stretch to the real McCoy, but Miss Selfridge's homage is surely the next best thing. If you click on the picture above you'll notice that most of the sizes have sadly sold out online (no surprise, really), but luckily the handy stock checker feature informed me that they were in stock in my local store. Needless to say I couldn't resist nipping down after work to try them on, and they are really very nice indeed; plus, despite the fact that "ankle grazer" just means "full length" on my legs, they're very flattering, too. However, my reservations are as follows: 1) They're pink. Ordinarily I do not go anywhere near pink. They are also brighter pink than in the above picture, which is a bit of a shame, but then again the slightly neon quality helps to de-girlify them. 2) I worry that if I all of a sudden go off printed jeans, I will no longer be able to wear half of my wardrobe. On the other hand, I love snakeskin and I would really like to style them like this.

So, what do you think... to keep or not to keep?
