today i bought...

Since buying my Topshop peace sign necklace I've loved having a very simple necklace to wear everyday, but as it was only £5 I know it's only a matter of time before it goes bronze. So I decided to invest in a better quality alternative. I've been eyeing up Dogeared's necklaces for some time now, but it took me a while to decide on which one to get. I almost went for the Capricorn sign but was put off by the silver chain, and in the end it just had to be the classic Karma necklace. I love that it's utterly simple and won't overpower other jewellery, but is still eye-catching and beautiful. I think it's safe to say this won't be leaving my neck any time soon.

today i'm channelling... caroline blomst

Regular readers will know that Caroline Blomst, aka the brains behind Carolinesmode.com and Stockholm Streetstyle, is one of my all-time favourite fashion icons. From the moment I discovered her blog almost two years ago, I've been completely obsessed with her sense of style. She has an almost unparalleled ability to look utterly fashionable, simply elegant and timelessly chic at all times - without exception. I don't think I've ever seen an outfit of hers I didn't like, and that's no mean feat. Caroline's secret lies, of course, in her innate styling ability, but also in her reliance on a strong set of truly magnificent basics, a wardrobe full of designer classics, and always a very simple, minimalist aesthetic. This means that while she does take some risks with fashion, staying true to her pared-back signature look makes all of her outfits seem perfectly understated. Take this, her most recent look (see it here or by clicking on the picture above). She's not breaking any boundaries but rather showing exactly how to put simple pieces together in such a way as to make them really stand out. The fashion formula is simple: take two basics (leather trousers and a grey jumper), add a casual jacket (khaki Isabel Marant) and finish off with knockout designer accessories (Céline tote and Chloé boots). The result speaks for itself. Luckily, the high street has provided us with some great affordable alternatives (though I'll admit nothing quite rivals that bag and those boots), so that we can try to capture a little of Caroline's styling know-how for ourselves. Be sure to check out her blog for much more where that came from.

today i want... zara open back jumpsuit

I've wanted a simple evening jumpsuit for quite some time, but until now I've never found the right one. This is because there are undoubtedly numerous opportunities for error with the jumpsuit, so you really must follow a few golden rules: 1) Mustn't look cheap (I can't vouch for this lovely Zara one as I haven't seen it in person, but it looks promising). 2) Mustn't have a bandeau-top, voluminous legs, a plunging front, a tie-waist... basically this reinforces rule number 1. 3) Must not be patterned. If in doubt, classic black is always the way forward. 4) Must be very simple but very chic. Rule 4 is of course the most difficult to abide by, but I do believe my search may be over, thanks to Zara. What I love most about this beauty, other than the fact that it conforms to all my rules, is the beautiful sheer draped open back: so utterly elegant and sophisticated. It's not often you get all that for £39.99.

Hate it when it won't even stop raining long enough to take photos. Needless to say I haven't quite perfected my umbrella pose. Still, quite appropriate weather given that I went to see Titanic 3D today...

today i bought...

Topshop hooded jumper /

Wasn't too excited by the Topshop mid-season sale last week (the mid-season ones are never as good as the end of seasons), but I did pick up this lovely knitted jumper, reduced from £42 to £25. I've wanted a hoodie for a while now, but wasn't sure they're quite "me" (let's just say nobody I know would ever associate me with sportswear). So I think this lovely knitted angora version is the perfect compromise. It's gorgeously soft and cosy, so just the thing to see me through this miserable wet weather we're having. Something else I've been searching for is the perfect nude lipstick, and I'm hoping this soft peach colour (much paler than it looks in the photo) might just be the one.

today i want... maarten van der horst for topshop hawaiian shirt

Right now, in this thundery changeable weather, I'm longing for summer. Whenever I see a photoshoot featuring a tanned model with endlessly long bare legs, a slick of orange lip gloss and beach blonde highlights, I feel incredibly envious. I have so many open-toed sandals and little shorts just calling out to be worn, but which must be cruelly rejected every day in favour of socks and knitwear. Anyway, in my current mood I am absolutely loving Hawaiian prints. I mean, doesn't this amazing shirt-dress make you want to be on a beach sipping a piña colada right away? Flung on over a bikini and with a slick of this lipstick, there would be something quite Pearl Harbour about it too (think we have Dior to thank for that one). Maarten van der Horst is the latest addition to Topshop's arsenal of young, up-and-coming designers, and based on this capsule collection I think we can expect big things from him.

today i love... beauty favourites

The Body Shop shea body butter /
Liz Earle cleanse & polish hot cloth cleanser /
Johnson's nourishing 24hour day cream /
Marks & Spencer creamy coconut hand & nail cream /

I don't have a very complicated beauty routine but I do rely on a few failsafe favourites. The Johnson's face moisturiser is the best I've found for nourishing my very dry skin while still feeling light and fresh (has SPF15 too), and the Liz Earle face wash is perfect for removing the day's make-up. The other two just smell amazing.

Right now I'm loving jeans that are just a little bit cropped, Current/Elliott style. It's a really flattering length and avoids the awkward to-tuck-or-not-to-tuck dilemma that you inevitably get with any jeans that aren't super-skinny.

today i'd save on... isabel marant vs denimocracy

On left / Isabel Marant Itzel tie-dye jeans / £225 at mytheresa
On right / Denimocracy tie-dye jeggings / £71 at ASOS

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Isabel Marant could design a bin bag in such a way that would make me want to wear it. She has a unique ability to transform many a "let's try and forget it ever happened" trend into something absolutely to-die-for. Tie-dye is a prime example of this: until just a few months ago I was very happy to relegate it to the 90s. But hey presto, Marant shows models emblazoned head-to-toe in the print and suddenly I'm foaming at the mouth to get my hands on some. I invested in some quite subtle Zara tie-dye jeans a couple of months ago and I absolutely love them, but now I find myself craving something even more full-on tie-dye as well. These fantastically in-your-face red Marant jeans definitely fit the bill. They are so absolutely of this season that I can pretty much guarantee that in a few months' time I'll wonder what on earth I was thinking. But to be honest that sort of makes me love them even more. Dropping £225 on a one-season item isn't really an option for me though (besides, they've all been snapped up), so thank goodness for this lookalike pair from jeans brand Denimocracy, stocked at good old ASOS. I may well be investing in these beauties very soon. In the meantime, if you need any inspiration on how to wear them, check out the ever-stylish Evangelie of Styleheroine.com looking sensational in her real deal Marants. Now that's a look to dye for (sorry...)
