today i want... asos mongolian fur coat

I've got something of a weakness for a fur coat. That said, I also find them very difficult to get right. Go too high street and they look oh so cheap. Go too vintage and they look oh so tatty. Buying a designer fur is of course my wish, but given that they will set you back in the region of £1k, that's not going to be an option any time soon. For now I'm focusing on my reliable high street friends, of which ASOS is one. The downside of its being an online retailer is that I don't know if this beauty will live up to its picture until I see it in the flesh (so to speak). But I do know that if it is true to life, then it might just be the perfect fur. Off-white; unapologetically huge in an Olsen-twin-wear-with-sunglasses kind of a way; delectably soft and shaggy: it really is perfection. All it needs is a simple black knit and leather trousers and that's it. Good to go. Warm, cosy and yet beautiful: it will solve all possible winter coat conundrums, and look pretty darned good while doing it.

today i want... whistles jamie fur-lined jacket

If you're as avid a shopper as I am, then you will know that horrible sinking feeling you get when thinking about "the ones that got away". That sale item that you left hanging on the rail, trying to be restrained, and have regretted ever since, or worse, the item you returned because you weren't sure, only to suddenly be sure and then find it gone forever. Melodramatic, maybe, but I can tell you I still feel the pain of a few items I so nearly called my own. Chief regret is the Zara silver heels which I wanted so, so, so badly, which I trekked to ten different stores in search of - only after I'd already returned them, mind. I never did find them and I ended up buying some more expensive, ill-fitting ones to replace them which I now can't wear. (Bitter? Yes, a little.) Anyway, the second biggest regret that springs to mind is a Topshop shearling-lined jacket: beautiful, black leather and oh so Acne-esque. After lusting after it at its full price of £250, I came across the perfect specimen reduced to £125. But having already splashed out in the sales, and reasoning that £125 was not at all cheap, I left it on the rail. Oh, the pain. Anyway, I recently stumbled across this Whistles beauty, and I can't help but be reminded of the Topshop jacket that got away. It's the beautiful fur lining, the oversized buckles, the sumptuous textured leather. You just know that it would really keep you warm. At £450 this is much more expensive than its alter ego was at full price (oh the irony), but the difference is that now I appreciate that sometimes, you have to shell out to cash in (if you know what I mean). This time I'm determined not to let it pass me by.

today i'm inspired by... zara december lookbook

Pictures / Zara.com

Zara really know how to produce a beautiful lookbook. I just love the clean, simple mood of these shots. The understated hair and make-up and no-frills feel puts the emphasis totally on the clothes. Of course Kasia Struss' show-stopping looks definitely help, but it all just seems incredibly wearable, even the triple tartan combo (though that one will take a braver woman than me to try). Added to my wish list: the short military coat, the low-armhole jumpsuit, the sheer tartan shirt and the fringed leather clutch.

What I wore last night for an evening of Nando's, wine and good company. I don't wear this velvet body much but I think it lends itself well to a high-waisted skirt.

today i want... zara embroidered slippers

Zara embroidered slippers / £49.99

The slipper trend has been a bit of a grower with me; you could argue the days of Charlotte Olympia's cat beauties are behind us, but I'm still feeling the lure of these decadent velvet flats. Admittedly I don't really wear flat shoes at all, but my GP has advised me to try it for a few days due to having slightly dodgy knees at the moment (gulp). And if you're going to abandon your heels, then it had better be in favour of some seriously beautiful flats. These babies definitely qualify for that accolade: I just love the velvet and the sumptuous embroidery. They're not online yet (this picture is from Zara People) but I saw them in my local store so I'm sure they will be soon. The only downside is the price; £49.99 is a lot for flats. I'd like to hold out for the sales, but I'm just not sure I can wait that long...

today i bought...

I posted about this bag a while ago now, but unfortunately it sold out before I could snap it up. So when it came back in stock, I wasn't about to let it escape me for a second time. It's just bag perfection in my eyes: beautiful croc-embossed leather, a size you can fit spare flats in (always a bonus), with sturdy handles and in classic black. Not a bad price for real leather either. It comes in tan and teal, too, or faux leather if you have a lower budget. I think what I love most about it, though, is that it's just a little bit Ashley Olsen-esque... which can only be a good thing in my eyes.

Monday 19 November 2012

today i bought...

I used to wear a lot of jewellery; I loved a chunky necklace, a standout earring for a night out and even a novelty animal-shaped ring or two. But in the last year or two I've found my need for it diminishing, and now have boxes of it that is rarely ever used. It's not that I don't love jewellery anymore; I'm just a lot more selective about it. Instead of piling on an assortment of necklaces and bracelets I wear my simple Dogeared Karma necklace everyday and usually a gold bracelet or watch to go with it. Recently, though, I've found myself quite wanting a ring to add to my simple daily selection, and the other day I found just the ticket when browsing Jordan Askill's capsule collection for Topshop. Most of the panther-themed pieces are awesome but a little on the statement (and expensive) side for me, but this beautiful little rose gold ring is pretty much perfection in my eyes. Utterly simple but still very eye-catching, it's a beautifully subtle rose colour and engraved on the inside with the designer's name. It's also plated with rose gold, which should mean that it will stand the test of time. Unfortunately it's now out of stock, but if you click the link above and bookmark it, keep checking back every day because sometimes if only one or two pieces are returned, Topshop won't list the item again but the restocked items will appear on that page. (You can also check out the similar silver ring here). As for the lovely pinky lilac lipstick, it was a free gift from Topshop for having 3 million Facebook fans. I think the offer still stands so check out Topshop's Facebook to get the code and snap up this freebie for yourself.

today i love... nowhere a/w'12

Pictures / Shop-nowhere.com (click here to shop)

Swedish super blogger Elin Kling is probably the busiest woman in the world, juggling as she does writing her fantastic style blog and editing her own magazine with designing collections for the likes of Guess By Marciano, and still managing to produce her own line, Nowhere, with co-designer Nhu Duong. I've written about Nowhere's two previous seasons because they spoke to my very fashion heart, and the A/W'12 offering is no different. It's hardly surprising that Elin should design clothes I wholeheartedly adore, given how much I wholeheartedly adore the way she dresses herself. Still, I am a little in awe at just how perfect this lookbook is. The leather trousers with V-cut ankles; the chain-handled boxy tote; the oversized mannish burgundy coat; the leather vest; the fuzzy knitwear... It's all just brilliant. The prices are not bad at all, either. The only issue is that it's only sold at Nelly.com, a Swedish retailer, meaning that returns are a little tricky. The postage costs are really very good, though, and the delivery is super fast, so please don't let that put you off. The only disappointment for me is that the leather trousers are faux rather than real, so I might be waiting for the sales on those ones. As for everything else, suddenly my Christmas list is looking a little too long...
