today i want... iro neena zebra tee

IRO Neena zebra distressed tee / £105 at Donna Ida (sold out)

My current obsession: this amazing hole-strewn zebra tee by inimitably cool French brand IRO (as worn perfectly by Caroline Blomst here). I am a sucker for animal print and having temporarily tired of leopard and snake, I've moved onto zebra. Desperately seeking a high street alternative to this sold-out beauty... Any wild animal sightings out there?

Don't get many opportunities to wear these shorts so thought I'd break them out today, despite the fact that the summer weather is fast retreating. Ah well, back to the umbrella and knitwear, I guess.

today i want... zara black court shoes

Some clothes and accessories are so perennial and classic that they are almost impossible to find. The perfect leather jacket; the perfect white shirt; the perfect red lipstick; the perfect trench coat. The list goes on, but top of it for me and among the most elusive of pieces is the perfect black court shoe. I've tried many an iteration of this most classic of footwear options, only to find myself disappointed time and again. Of course what I'm aiming for is patent Louboutin Pigalles, but since that's not going to happen anytime soon, I'm going to have to settle for the perfect affordable black court shoe. Step forward these beauties from that most excellent purveyor of footwear on the high street, Zara. Of course the key to perfection is not just in the appearance but also in the fit, so I can't say for certain whether these are indeed the holy grail. But they look pretty darned close to me.

today i bought...

A few days ago I posted excitedly about the new Zara Advance collection, and now my eagerly snapped-up items have at last arrived. First up are these brilliant blue leopard jeans, which caught my eye immediately. It's fair to say I'm a little obsessed with Current/Elliott's selection of printed jeans and have amassed quite a few lookalikes (including striped, floral, brown leopard and pink snakeskin). What I love most about this latest addition, though, is the point of difference: the leopard print is raised velvet flocking, giving the jeans quite a dramatic, evening-appropriate quality, and ensuring they'll translate perfectly into autumn.

Secondly, my quest for the perfect black leather trousers has felt at times never-ending and utterly fruitless. I've ordered countless pairs only to return them dissatisfied, and I've lusted over even more before balking at the quadruple figure price tag. So I was very nervous for these babies to arrive on my doorstep. It has to be said that I'm still testing them out and will be wearing them around the house for a few days before I decide to commit, because they are certainly not cheap. But the leather quality is astoundingly good: utterly slip-through-the-fingers butter soft, thin and malleable; they feel absolutely amazing and are as comfortable as leggings. I think, dare I say it, that my lengthy search might just be at an end.

Unfortunately, though, this does mean that the Mango blue suede jacket is going to have to be returned; sometimes you just have to prioritise. I may well snap up this cheaper H&M version instead though...

today i love... peplums

ASOS Revive silk and mesh peplum blouse / £13.50 (reduced from £45)

Well, if I'm honest, I'm not all that sure that I do actually love peplums. It's a trend that's been gathering pace for a while now, to the point where it seems you can't move for frivolous frills adorning tops, dresses, skirts and jackets alike. But there's something inherently prim about the peplum, which is making me wary. Generally speaking I'm an advocate of minimalism: as few frills and fussy details as possible, please. This isn't a hard and fast rule, of course (in fashion rules are absolutely made to be broken, after all), but it's safe to say that given the choice between a smart figure-hugging secretary dress and a pair of little leather shorts, I know I'd gravitate towards the shorts every time. Perhaps it's that the peplum seems far too grown-up and ladylike, too. But when a trend like this refuses to die, I can't help but take a second look. Even my fellow minimalists Elin Kling and Caroline Blomst have taken the peplum plunge. So I've scoured the high street for a few "soft" peplum options for the waist-frill-wary. No skirts or dresses, you'll notice; I think tops and jackets are a much less scary option for the uninitiated. The key is to dress these items down a bit: team Topshop's grey peplum top with ripped denim, or pair ASOS' girly blouse with leather trousers. Look for details to toughen things up, too: the hard zip on Topshop's white jacket or the butter-soft leather of Zara's. After all, we shouldn't forget how flattering the peplum can be, so maybe taking a little fashion risk could pay off in dividends.

Topshop crayon in Rock Chick /

So the Acne-alike Mango blue suede jacket has arrived. I really love it, but have to confess I'm not entirely sure whether to keep it because I'm a little worried it might be a one-season wonder. Sometimes the more I absolutely need to have something at the time, the more quickly I go off it. I put it on for today's outfit photos (coming soon) so maybe you can let me know whether you think it's a keeper...

In other news I just had to tell you about the eye crayon I picked up in Topshop today because it was reduced from £6 to a mere £1. It's a lovely dark metallic purple colour, which is super flattering and just perfect for evenings.

today i love... packing

Sadly not packing for a tropical beach holiday, but instead I'm off to Manchester today for my sister's graduation ceremony. Maybe I'm just a geek but I quite enjoy packing (as long as it's not too last minute); I like making a list, planning my outfits and folding everything neatly away. My lovely weekend bag courtesy of the Zara sale certainly helps the process, as do my new Dalmatian printed sandals. I think it actually makes such a difference to how you feel about your holiday if you have a nice make-up bag, a pretty perfume and some beautiful heels to pack away in a smart bag rather than shoving stuff into plastic bags in a grotty suitcase. Anyway, for me it certainly makes the prospect of rainy Manchester seem a little brighter...
